BU Sunscreen is the continuation of Jeff and Josie's passion to create environmentally aware sun protection products that work, and people love to wear. They met 30 years ago, when Jeff hired her to be his personal trainer, and fell in love, embarking on their journey together as husband and wife. They realized that their ability to understand each other allowed them to work together really well. Helping people enjoy the outdoor active lifestyle without worrying about sunburns or skin cancer inspired their commitment to change how people apply and experience sun care. Josie had over 35 years of experience in the skincare business, starting at Estee Lauder, and Jeff, a self described sun-worshipper, with 29 years in the sunscreen business.
In 1994, they co-founded and launched a line of sun and skin care products for athletes at the Commonwealth Games under the brand name KINeSYS. The venture successfully sold internationally. In 2014, years after the passing of one of their mentors, Brian Maxwell of Powerbar, they sold the business and decided to spend time with their three children, their dog, and their cat in Malibu.
After receiving emails, texts, and phone calls from past customers, they realized that market demand was growing for new sun protection products that reflected their philosophy of being the best you, you can be. They also wanted it to be fun and easy to use so that people would use it daily! They started BU Brands, from Malibu (the bu) with the motto: "Be you!" BÜ (the dots/umlaut over the U made it look like a happy face).
Making the best products for people and their love of the planet, drives their commitment to doing the best they can and to reduce their carbon foot-print. Bottles and sprayers are 100% recyclable, and a GMP-compliant manufacturer that uses Solar Power for their production, makes BU virtually carbon neutral.
On top of this, they produce the MOST sustainable sunscreens, as the ingredients are bio-degradable and degradable, reverting to their source; Silica, Water & CO2 (quartz/sand).
Again, with their love of the environment, BU products are gluten-free, Vegan, and cruelty-free. They don't contain any animal derivatives, and they're PETA certified.
Traveling is one of their passions, and protection is a must, where ever they landed, so BU's sunscreen bottles are great for carry-on bags. The BU bottle size is 3.3oz (98ml), providing about 500 sprays per bottle! (just under TSA guidelines of 3.4oz- 100ml). The pocket size of 1oz (30ml) provides approx—170 sprays per bottle.
